Use These Paint Colors When Selling Your Home

Keep in Mind that First Impressions Matter

First impressions go a long way in real estate, which is why sellers should properly prepare their homes before prospective buyers get a tour of the place. Buyers will first notice the outside of the home when entering the property. For this reason, it’s especially important to make sure the exterior looks well-kept and attractive.

Weather-beaten walls or signs of mold may turn a buyer off from even entering your home, so make sure outside walls are in tip-top shape. If you decide the outside of your home does, in fact, need a new coat of paint, we recommend using paint colors that complement other homes in the neighborhood as well as the trees and plants that surround your home. This way, your home won’t stick out like a sore thumb. Instead, it will subtly attract buyers with cleanly painted walls that look nice and neat.

White is an especially popular color, followed by brown, tan, and beige – all are neutral colors that safely decorate exterior walls. However, you will want to consider the structural design before deciding on a neutral paint color. Homes with unique architectural details wear brighter colors well and benefit from paint colors with brighter hues.

Aim for Warm, Inviting, and Relaxing

Keep in mind that you’re painting your home for future residents, and it’s smart to keep your personal touches to yourself. Opting for colors that are flat and muted won’t overwhelm buyers, and these colors are also quite relaxing.

Earth tones, like shades of brown, green, blue, orange, and red are naturally warm and inviting. They reflect colors in nature and have a soothing effect. They also complement many materials commonly found in households like wood, stone, metal, and glass. Darker earth tones like coffee work well in small spaces and on accent walls. 

More neutral colors are, perhaps, your safest bet. Creams and off-whites are perfect for large spaces, brightening up rooms and giving the interior of your home a light, airy feel. Buyers look for spaces that feel pleasant to be in, and painting living and dining rooms with these colors creates a welcoming space for all to enjoy.

Smaller spaces, however, benefit from paints with a little more punch to them. Bathrooms and cubby holes can be accented with fun, whimsical colors without being too obnoxious. Plus, it’s nice to show buyers there’s room for creativity and personality in the space they may soon call their home.

When in Doubt, Use Brown

If you’re stuck scratching your head because you find the right color, consider using brown. When used in its lightest shade, brown is warm and inviting. Medium-hued browns make rooms glow and look great with white mantle pieces and baseboards. Dark browns are especially cozy, slightly rustic, and keep rooms from feeling too big.
